A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
